Did you know that the current generation of diesel fuels contains a significant percentage of biofuel ? This seems environmentally friendly, but for recreational boating it poses a big risk, especially after a long winter layup.
When your boat sits idle for months, the bio-component in the diesel attracts moisture. This is the perfect breeding ground for algae growth and bacteria. These algae form a thick slime layer at the bottom of your tank and in the pipes.
- The consequence: Clogged filters, malfunctioning injectors, and an engine that stalls just when you need it most (often right as you leave the harbor).
- Our advice: Add a special fuel additive (anti-bacterial agent) to your tank. Then let the engine run for a while so the additive spreads throughout the entire system — from the tank to the pipes and the pump. This prevents microorganisms from having a chance to grow.
